Materials Needed

1. Wax

Choose a wax suitable for pillar candles, such as paraffin wax, beeswax, or a blend designed for pillar candles. Ensure it is heat-resistant and suitable for molding.

2. Wick

Select pre-tabbed pillar candle wicks appropriate for the diameter of your candles. Wick size affects how well the candle burns, so choose accordingly.

3. Mold

Use a pillar candle mold made of metal, plastic, or silicone. Alternatively, you can create makeshift molds using cardboard tubes or PVC pipes lined with wax paper.

4. Heat Source

Double boiler or microwave-safe container for melting wax. Avoid direct heat sources to prevent wax from overheating.

5. Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil (Optional)

Choose a fragrance oil or essential oil to scent your candles. Ensure it is suitable for use in candles and follow recommended usage rates.

6. Candle Dye (Optional)

Candle dye chips, liquid candle dye, or crayons to color the wax. Choose colors that complement your decor or match your theme.

7. Stirring Utensil

A spoon, chopstick, or dedicated candle-making stirrer for mixing wax and additives.

Creating DIY Pillar Candles

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Clear a clean, flat surface for candle-making. Protect the area with newspaper or a crafting mat to catch spills.

2. Prepare the Mold and Wick

Place the wick in the center of the mold, securing it with a wick holder or dipping the end in melted wax and pressing it to the mold's bottom.

3. Melt the Wax

Place wax in a double boiler or microwave-safe container. Heat gently until the wax is completely melted, stirring occasionally. Monitor temperature if using a thermometer.

4. Add Color and Scent (Optional)

  • Divide melted wax into separate containers or pour pitchers if adding color or scent. Add the desired amount of candle dye or crayon shavings to achieve the desired color. Stir well to blend color evenly.
  • Add fragrance or essential oil to the melted wax according to recommended usage rates. Stir thoroughly to distribute fragrance.

5. Pour Wax into Mold

Carefully pour melted wax into the prepared mold, ensuring the wick remains centered. Leave a small amount of space at the top. Allow the wax to cool and harden slightly before proceeding.

6. Cool and Set

Let the candle cool and harden completely, usually for several hours or overnight, depending on wax type and mold size. Avoid moving or disturbing the candle during this time.

7. Remove Candle from Mold

Once fully set, gently remove the candle from the mold. If using a rigid mold, gently tap the mold or use a release spray to ease removal.

8. Trim Wick and Finish

  • Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax surface. This promotes even burning when the candle is lit.
  • Optionally, smooth any rough edges or imperfections on the candle's surface using a heat gun or hair dryer.

9. Display and Enjoy

Place your DIY pillar candle on a decorative plate or candle holder. Light it to enjoy its warm glow and fragrance, creating a cozy atmosphere in your home.

Remember

Mix and match colors, scents, and mold shapes to create unique pillar candles that suit your decor or occasion.
