Materials Needed

1. Wax

Choose a wax suitable for container candles, such as soy wax, paraffin wax, or beeswax. Ensure it is suitable for layering and holds colors well.

2. Containers

Select heat-resistant containers for candle-making, such as glass jars or metal tins. Ensure they are clean and dry before use.

3. Wicks

Use pre-tabbed candle wicks appropriate for the diameter of your containers. Wick size affects how well the candle burns, so choose accordingly.

4. Fragrance Oils or Essential Oils

Select a variety of fragrance oils or essential oils to create different scented layers. Ensure they are suitable for use in candles and follow recommended usage rates.

5. Candle Dye

Candle dye chips, liquid candle dye, or crayons can be used to color each layer. Choose colors that complement each other or match your decor.

6. Heat Source

Double boiler or microwave-safe container for melting wax. Avoid direct heat sources to prevent wax from overheating.

7. Thermometer (Optional)

Use a thermometer to monitor wax temperature during melting for best results.

8. Stirring Utensil

A spoon, chopstick, or dedicated candle-making stirrer for mixing wax and additives.

9. Hot Glue Gun or Wick Stickers

Use a hot glue gun or wick stickers to secure wicks to the bottom of containers.

Creating DIY Layered Candles

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Clear a clean, flat surface for candle-making. Protect the area with newspaper or a crafting mat to catch spills.

2. Prepare Containers and Wicks

Secure wicks to the bottom center of each container using a hot glue gun or wick stickers. Ensure wicks are centered and upright.

3. Melt the Wax

Place wax in a double boiler or microwave-safe container. Heat gently until the wax is completely melted, stirring occasionally. Monitor temperature if using a thermometer.

4. Add Color and Scent to Each Layer

Divide melted wax into separate containers or pour pitchers for each layer. Add the desired amount of candle dye or crayon shavings to achieve the desired color for each layer. Stir well to blend color evenly.

Add fragrance or essential oil to each layer of wax according to recommended usage rates. Stir thoroughly to distribute fragrance.

5. Pour the First Layer

Carefully pour the first colored and scented wax layer into prepared containers, filling them to the desired depth. Allow the wax to cool and harden completely before proceeding to the next layer.

6. Repeat for Additional Layers

Repeat steps 3 to 5 for each subsequent layer, alternating colors and scents as desired. Allow each layer to cool and harden before pouring the next layer on top.

7. Trim Wicks and Decorate (Optional)

  • Trim wicks to about 1/4 inch above the wax surface once the candles are fully set. This promotes even burning.
  • Optionally, decorate containers with ribbons, labels, or charms to personalize your layered candles.

8. Enjoy Your DIY Layered Candles

Once fully set and trimmed, your DIY layered candles are ready to use or gift. Light them to enjoy their beautiful layers of color and fragrance, creating a soothing and inviting atmosphere.

Remember

  • Patience and Timing

Allow each layer to cool and harden completely before pouring the next layer to prevent the mixing of colors.

  • Experimentation

Mix and match colors and scents to create unique combinations that suit your preferences or match different seasons.

  • Safety First

Work in a well-ventilated area and follow safety precautions when handling hot wax and candles.
