Materials Needed

1. Wax

Choose a wax suitable for floating candles, such as paraffin or soy wax. Ensure it is formulated to float and holds colors and scents well.

2. Wick

Select pre-tabbed wicks designed for floating candles. These wicks are typically shorter and thicker to support the candle while floating.

3. Container for Molding

Use heat-resistant molds made of metal or silicone specifically designed for floating candles. Alternatively, repurpose small containers like tarts aluminum, or tea light molds.

4. Heat Source

Double boiler or microwave-safe container for melting wax. Avoid direct heat sources to prevent wax from overheating.

5. Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil (Optional)

Choose a fragrance oil or essential oil to scent your floating candles. Ensure it is suitable for use in candles and follow recommended usage rates.

6. Candle Dye (Optional)

Use candle dye chips or liquid candle dye to color the wax. Choose colors that complement your decor or match your event theme.

8. Stirring Utensil

A dedicated candle-making stirrer, spoon, or chopstick for mixing wax and additives.

Creating DIY Floating Candles

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Clear a clean, flat surface for candle-making. Protect the area with newspaper or a crafting mat to catch spills.

2. Prepare Molds and Wicks

Place pre-tabbed wicks in the center of each mold, ensuring they are secured at the bottom. For multiple wicks, evenly space them within the mold.

3. Melt the Wax

Place wax in a double boiler or microwave-safe container. Heat gently until the wax is completely melted, stirring occasionally. Monitor temperature if using a thermometer.

4. Add Color and Scent (Optional)

  • Divide melted wax into separate containers or pour pitchers if adding color or scent. Add the desired amount of candle dye to achieve your preferred color. Stir well until the color is evenly distributed.
  • Add fragrance or essential oil to the melted wax according to recommended usage rates. Stir thoroughly to blend the fragrance evenly.

5. Pour Wax into Molds

Carefully pour melted wax into prepared molds, ensuring wicks remain centered. Leave a small amount of space at the top. Allow the wax to cool and harden slightly before proceeding.

6. Cool and Set

Cool and harden completely, usually for several hours or overnight, depending on wax type and mold size. Avoid moving or disturbing the candles during this time.

7. Remove Candles from Molds

Once fully set, gently remove the floating candles from the molds. If using rigid molds, gently tap the mold or use a release spray to ease removal.

8. Trim Wicks and Finish

Trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch above the candle surface. This promotes even burning when the candle is lit.

9. Display and Enjoy

Place your DIY floating candles in bowls of water, decorative vases, or floating candle holders. Light them to enjoy their gentle glow and ambient fragrance, creating a tranquil atmosphere in your home.

Remember

  • Wick Placement

Ensure wicks are securely centered in the molds to prevent uneven burning.

  • Experimentation

Try different mold shapes, sizes, and color combinations to create unique floating candles that suit your style.

  • Safety First

Work in a well-ventilated area and follow safety precautions when handling hot wax and candles.
